Dan May, Style Director MR PORTER.COM –

Who and what inspires your personal style?

Location often inspires my style, I definitely would pack differently for a trip to LA than I would a trip to Paris. I am also one for channeling / creating my own style more than reference others if I am honest. What works for us as individuals makes us feel good and comfortable varies for everyone every day!

What are your favourite Australian holiday locations?

I love shooting in Sydney and Melbourne. I did my padi diving course on the Great Barrier Reef which was an incredible experience and I loved my time spent in Byron even though I’m sure it’s changed a lot since I used to visit 20 years ago on a backpacker’s budget! I would love to get to Qualia and it sounds like an unforgettable experience.

Accessorizing can often be a scary task for men, what would you recommend to a man who wants to try something new or freshen up his look?

Have fun with accessories but don’t go overboard, panama hat, a couple of bracelets and a good watch goes a long way.

Have you seen any interesting new resort trends for men?

There are more and more season-less day-to-day essentials that can be adopted into a guy’s vacation wardrobe. It’s an endless summer depending on where you are in the world, and MR PORTER has enough offerings to dress for warmer climates year round. I think the offering of more casual tailoring has definitely improved over the past few years too and it is a great way for staying comfy and cool but still looking great.

What are the essentials for men when packing for a resort holiday?

Go for lightweight, natural fabrics like cotton and linen. Opt for looser fits and save the slim-fitting, tailored pieces for the workplace. An unstructured blazer, lightweight suit, lightweight sweater, linen shirt, comfortable chinos, tailored shorts and a good pair of loafers, boat shoes or sandals, all can be worn sock less or with invisible socks. Accessories can include a great pair of sunglasses, and a lightweight tote bag.

Can you recommend your must-have grooming items when travelling?

Anything with SPF should be part of your daily routine but especially when you know you are traveling to sun soaked Qualia for race week. We sell a fantastic exclusive moisturizer from Santa Maria Novella that I never leave home without.

How can men strike the perfect balance between relaxed holiday dressing, whilst still looking stylish?

Simplicity and comfort is key. A Sunspel t-shirt with linen Incotex trousers and a pair of driving loafers is pretty fail-safe. An unstructured jacket takes it to another level of formality whilst still looking relaxed. And for a nice extra twist when you are not wearing tie, go for a pocket square.

How do you like to unwind when on holidays?

By not having too many ‘plans.’ I like to be able to wake up and react to my mood, if that means staying by the pool and heading to a beach bar for lunch so be it.
