IKEA’s Designer Collab with Hay Another Excellent Collection

Ikea over the past decade has proven to be a leader when it comes to collaboration with amazing artists and designers, and this current collaboration with renowned Danish design company Hay has resulted in another amazing collection the YPPERLIG.

HAY was founded in Copenhagen, Denmark, in 2002 by husband and wife duo Mette and Rolf Hay, with  a strong commitment to design and the production of furniture and accessories with an international appeal HAY wants to make good design accessible to everyone, and together with IKEA they are bringing their high end designer products to Australians all at an affordable price.

Each piece created by HAY and IKEA is a celebration of basics; where products are clever yet understated, all with a timeless quality that ages beautifully. The collaboration challenged both HAY and IKEA to push the traditional Scandinavian design boundaries.

The collection has a classic Scandinavian feel with light colours, high quality and clean design. While Scandinavian design has always reflected traditional values of functionality, humbleness, simplicity and the desire to create a family friendly home, the collection moulds the traditional with modern values, wants and needs – including multifunctional and space saving home furnishing pieces.

YPPERLIG consists of larger items such as sofas and coffee tables all the way to smaller accessories like candle holders, textiles, containers and mirrors.

The collection even includes a makeover of the iconic IKEA FRAKTA bag. Considering that the IKEA bag is one the most recognizable IKEA products in the world, Mette wanted to refresh it while still honouring the original. Without changing the size or materials she worked with the colours and the weaving patterns.

Talking about her inspiration for the FRAKTA bag and collaboration with IKEA, Mette said, “It’s one of the most known and used IKEA products, but one that no one appreciates as a design object. It’s a celebration of this iconic product.”

Mette adds about the collection, “When creating accessories I like to look to fashion and trends and I think that the accessories we’ve developed together for this collection will make people see some of the most well-known IKEA products in a different way. Really good products made by IKEA and sprinkled with a bit of HAY.”

Tiffany Buckins, Head of Interior Design for IKEA Australia, said of the collection,

“YPPERLIG features clean lines, muted colours and classic Scandinavian materials. While each piece can be categorised as a timeless and classic basic made to fit any home, IKEA and have HAY elevated basics into must have products with a high design value. HAY and IKEA have pushed Scandinavian design to new levels – enabling us to bring amazing products into everyday homes all at an affordable price.

YPPERLIG is now available in-store nationally.
