Sydney Black Lives Matter March, My Memorable Experience with 20,000 People

Saturday the 6th of March will be forever embedded into my memory, the Sydney Black Lives Matter march, a day filled with solidarity, with love, but most of all hope that a change was on the way.

I’ve been following closely the wave of change that began with the brutal demise of George Floyd at the hands of violent police officers, which was the proverbial straw that broke the camel’s back and catalyst that began what has now become the biggest civil rights movement since the 1950’s -1960’s.

When the Sydney March was announced I knew I had to be there, I knew it wasn’t enough to post on Social Media, to debate against people’s racist and bigoted posts. A little fear in regards to Covid did pop up, but I knew that this was important and that I had to be on the right side of this movement and stand in solidaritary with POC, our Indigenous People here and around the world and our African American brothers and sisters who have had to endure so much for so long. #BlackLivesMatter #IndigenousLivesMatter

Arriving into the city on Saturday the feeling was electric, as I cast my eye over the crowd the mix of races present and the peaceful energy of those gathered made my heart burst with pride. As a mixed race child of Fijian and Mixed-European heritage I’ve experienced my fair share of racist experiences, but they are nothing compared to the experiences our Indigenous Australian’s and African American’s face on the daily.

It’s time to make a stand, it’s time justice and equal rights prevail, it IS time to be ANTI -RACIST and to say it loud and change the behaviour and be a part of the journey to equality “

Where will you stand???
