Autumn/Winter ‘14 sees the first collaboration between British luxury outerwear brand and the originator of the classic raincoat, Mackintosh, with cult preppy Californian designer label Band of Outsiders.

This season, Band of Outsiders designer Scott Sternberg re-imagines the understated luxury aesthetic of Mackintosh with their typically humorous but light, Californian approach to American prep.

Drawing key themes, prints and colours from the Band of Outsiders Autumn/Winter ‘14 ready to wear collection twinned with the seasonal design notes for which the brand is known.

Sternberg initially revisits the ombre effect typical of the Band of Outsiders brand which set against the typical preppy patterns evokes the allure of a Californian sunset. Applying this design feature to the traditional British blackwatch plaid, the pattern degrades into jet black creating an effect that on first glance appears to be a solid black trench; resulting in a subtle yet whimsical take on the classic Mackintosh.

Next we see Sternberg play on a reference of his AW14 collection theme ‘The Death of the Newspaper’. The classic Latin dummy text ‘Lorem Ipsum’, more commonly used in newspaper and layout publishing, is printed all over the classic Mackintosh single-breasted Dunkeld jacket.

Finally Band of Outsiders employ colour blocking to an all-new model especially designed for the collaboration, combining the design elements of both an anorak and a raincoat in a short double-breasted style. The colour is used to highlight each individual part of the jacket including the hood, epaulets and welt pockets with the grommets and buttons finished with a coloured, high gloss enamel finish.
