A Papal Visit to Melbourne

One of the most memorable breakfasts I’ve had recently was on my blitz visit to Melbourne with my a good friend Lloyd.

We had being soliciting suggestions from friends and colleagues on places we should visit when in Melbourne, and Reuben at www.samplecoffee.com.au suggested we visit www.popejoan.com.au.

We hopped in a cab and went straight to Pope Joan in Brunswick East, excited to see what they would have on offer.

If we hadn’t being aware of its actual physical address, we would have being oblivious to its existence. It sits smack in amongst industrial warehouses, mechanic garages and offices. My first impressions were of a laid back very hip cafe, which didn’t seem to have a lot of seating or room. This was soon dispelled when we were advised by a friendly waiter that we could sit out the back near the herb garden or in the annex between the cafe and the The Bishop of Ostia the adjoining bar. We opted to sit in the annex as to get a good view of the happenings and to be able to take pictures.

It took us a while to decide on what to order because everything sounds so yummy, it was refreshing and exciting to find things on the menu I had never seen before. We ordered coffees straight away, and I must say it is worth the visit just for the coffee.

We finally made our decisions, I chose the special of the day smoked salmon and cheese stuffed and crumbed zucchini flowers with a slow cooked poached egg and leafy greens, I also got tempted to add a side of sausage. While Lloyd went with the Seven Hills Spicy Goat Sausage, Fried Egg, Avocado, Coriander, Chilli Jam, Dukkah. The food was packed with flavour, light and absolutely delicious.

Worth the plane ride there 🙂
